Philadelphia Hotel Among Those Impacted by Data Breach

HEI Hotels and Resorts, the operator of several established hotels across the United States, recently experienced a major data breach on their payment systems. The Westin Philadephia was among the affected locations.

The well-known hotel operator discovered malware on their payment systems in early to mid-June, exposing the information of any hotel guest who patronized the hotel restaurants, bars, spas, lobby shops, and other facilities at the properties. Exposed information likely includes payment card account numbers, card expiration dates, and verification codes. Hackers targeted the businesses with malware beginning last year, capturing payment data as it was recorded in real-time at POS terminals. To view a complete list of the affected hotels, click here.

In a recent statement, HEI claimed that the breach has now been contained and the company plans to bolster its data security to lessen the risk of future cyberattacks. This breach follows similar attacks launched against hotel giants Hyatt and Starwood earlier this year.
