Desktop Maintenance: Challenges and Solutions

DesktopIt is a fact of life in the modern business world that employees are increasingly expected to perform more tasks in less time.  This situation results in increased efficiency and productivity, both of which have a positive impact on the bottom line, but is also leads to an unintended side effect: sometimes vital tasks such as desktop maintenance are neglected.

Employees may notice that their systems are running slower in general or even experiencing more crashes; both of these circumstances cause downtime that disrupts workflow, sometimes causing a cascade effect in complex organizations where tasks must follow a critical path in order to be completed on time and under budget.  Yet employees that are hard-pressed to complete their daily assignments may feel they have no option but to continue dealing as best they can with faltering equipment.  Indeed, such employees may lack the IT expertise necessary to realize that a simple task such as a hard disk error scan or defragmentation routine could restore a struggling desktop to full functionality.

This situation illustrates the need for a program of regular, coherent desktop maintenance.  Hard drives should be scanned for errors on a scheduled basis and temporary files should be cleared away in order to restore systems to a state in which they can run without errors slowing them down.  Relying on enterprise staff to perform such tasks is problematic because most employees lack the time, the necessary skills, or both.

Instead, a managed programs approach should be implemented so that a contracted IT company regularly visits the enterprise to provide desktop maintenance support.
