Working effectively with an IT consultant sometimes means speaking his or her language.  When discussing cloud computing options with a consultant, it can be helpful to have a clear understanding of some of the terms commonly used in this area of computing.

1. Cloud SLA

This stands for ‘cloud service level agreement’ and is a contract between a cloud services provider and an end user.  This contract should specify various conditions to be met, such as how service interruptions will be dealt with and a guaranteed level of uptime.  Businesses are advised to work with IT consulting experts in order to create an SLA that keeps their interests in mind.

2. Cloud storage

This refers to an organizations ability to store data in a central repository that all users can reach from any internet-enabled location.  Cloud storage is different from network storage because with the latter, users generally have to be at the company premises so they can hook into a cabled or wireless connection on site.  Cloud storage, in contrast, places data online so that it is accessible worldwide.

3. Green cloud

This term is almost self-explanatory; it refers to the fact that cloud technology can help a business to have a lower ecological ‘footprint’. Running fewer resources more efficiently can save electrical load, but establishing a green cloud can have even more significant benefits in terms of public relations.  Consumers these days are definitely looking for businesses that can present themselves as green.

4. Cloud washing

‘Cloud washing’ happens when a vendor has labeled a product as cloud computing when it is not really a cloud offering at all.  Those who are new to cloud computing should work closely with IT consulting firms as they consider their software options in order to avoid products which have been cloud washed.
